Celia Cernadas: Bolivia

Celia Cernadas is a Knight International Fellow leading a community radio project in Bolivia.


Project Goal: Create a digital platform enabling rural radio stations to share programming on important issues such as poverty, education and women's rights.
A professional journalist for 18 years, she recently was awarded a master's degree in international relations from the Barcelona Institute of International Relations. 


For most of the past four years, she has headed the international department of Catalunya Radio, the public radio station network of Catalonia, Spain. Prior to that, she was a reporter at the station for seven years. 


From 2000-2007, the station deployed Cernadas to report in Iraq, Israel, Jordan, kenya, Mexico, Russia, Somalia, and Syria, and the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Cernadas also has been a print reporter, working for La Vanguardia newspaper and Els 4 Cantons/El Punt.

Local journalism: the challenge in Bolivia
In a recent workshop about journalism, organized by a consortium of universities in Santa Cruz, the brasilian Osman Patzzi, member of the ONADEM -the National Media Observatory-, concluded that local journalism that involves the community, and that talks about its problems, is the future solution for the current crisis that the sector is living due to the impact of digital tools and the world financial difficulties.
