Barton will work with Zambia's newspapers to develop coverage that leads to improvements in health-care delivery in a country struggling to contain an HIV/AIDS crisis.
Antigone Barton is a reporter who has focused on public health, social services and environment at The Palm Beach Post for the past eight years. She has been a journalist for 12 years and prior to that taught in New York City and Richmond, Va., schools. Her work has been recognized by the National Association of Black Journalists, the U.S. AIDS Conference and the Society for Professional Journalists for deadline news. A three-part 2007 newspaper series on conditions facing sex workers and prisoners in Haiti and the Dominican Republic was credited with helping prompt USAID to authorize additional funding for prisons. The reporting project also included video documentaries, a nationally syndicated public television program, lesson plans used in high schools, and a Web site with videos.
