Alison Bethel: Ghana

 

Alison Bethe is a Knight International Journalism Fellow leading a project to improve the coverage of politics and government in Ghana. She is managing editor of The Nassau Guardian in the Bahamas. She began her journalism career at The Boston Globe, where she was senior assistant city editor
Project Goal: Generate for the first time in-depth coverage of corruption, ethnic tension and social issues at leading political newspaper and on radio ahead of pivotal elections; created manual for journalists on balanced election coverage amid concerns about violence; developed first voters’ guide.

Bethel was features editor for The Detroit News, where she oversaw a staff of 43 who produced seven daily sections and five weekly special sections covering food, health and fitness, Weekend, home and garden, and kids. Alison then moved to Washington; she served for five years as The Detroit News’ bureau chief in the U.S. capitol. Before joining The Nassau Guardian, Bethel was the executive editor of the Legal Times. She is a graduate of Howard University, where she studied journalism and theater. alibethel@aol.com
